One of the themes of the Canadian film program at this year's Toronto International Film Festival was new Canadian stories, films from the perspective of filmmakers that may not have been born in Canada, but have come to make our country home, and perhaps offer a unique perspective of it. Raha Shirazi falls into that category. Born in Tehran, but raised in Canada, her latest film is a celebration of tradition, and follows a young woman silently walks alone to retrieve water from a natural source. In the simple eight minute film, Shirazi captures her story in a very visual sense, and reveals the role that ritual and vigil play in negotiating grief. Press+1 got the chance to interview Shirazi while she was at TIFF.
