The series opens with the two detectives, played by local theatre veterans Andy Curtis (Dobbs) and Nicola Elson (Sunshine), waiting in line at Calgary’s Jelly Modern Doughnut shop on their first day as partners, engaging in small talk that quickly goes askew. Despite the awkwardness of their characters’ interactions, the two actors have a charming chemistry.
Curtis is one of the founders of Calgary’s fabled One Yellow Rabbit theatre company, while Elson has most recently been involved in Quest Theatre.
The ten episode series was developed by head writer Jason Long, along with producers Matt Watterworth and Scott Westby. Said Long, “We were looking to do something in the viral market, something that would showcase the local scene.” Long, who has written short and feature-length films like Walk All Over Me as well as television pilots, said that drafting the web series was a fun challenge. “It was challenging in the fact that you’re completing a story. It was my first crack at taking these characters in a series through a complete arc. The writing began when we knew we had a shooting day and the actual shoot itself came in just under twelve hours.” Each week sees a new episode of U Jelly? released on Thursday, building momentum towards the series finale on Valentine’s Day. Much of the promotion for the series has been done online through outlets like YouTube and Facebook, and Long notes that already a few episodes in, people seem really captivated, especially in the identity of Wendel, Det. Sunshine’s mysterious boyfriend. He laughs at all the speculation, which even includes a suggestion that ex-NHLer Wendel Clark might be the mystery man himself, but Long promises the identity of Wendel will feature prominently in Episode 8. It looks like several thousand people will be waiting. You can see the first 3 episodes below:
