Were any of the winners surprises?

On the movie side, the biggest surprise of the night was Martin Scorsese's win for HUGO. Most people had predicted that Michel Hazanivicius would win for THE ARTIST, so Scorsese's win was a nice surprise: HUGO is Scorsese's best movie in nearly two decades, and one of his very best, period. I'm glad to see it get recognition.

On the TV side, Kelsey Grammer's victory over Bryan Cranston was definitely a surprise. (Then again, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association didn't even nominate BREAKING BAD as Best TV Series, so all of their decisions should be taken with a grain of salt.)

What do the results mean for the Oscars?

Not a lot. THE ARTIST and THE DESCENDANTS were already considered front-runners, as were all the acting winners.

How was the host, Ricky Gervais?

Surprisingly subdued. He wasn't nearly as nasty as he was last year, which was disappointing. Why bring him back if you're just going to neuter him?

He did have a few good lines throughout the night, especially this one: "The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker, and more easily bought. Allegedly." And regarding Eddie Murphy's departure as Oscar host: "When the man who said 'Yes' to NORBIT says 'No' to you, you know you're in trouble." Gervais was bleeped only once, when he said of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, "I can't understand a !&$%ing thing they say."

When Gervais introduced Madonna, he made the tired and obvious "she's just like a virgin" joke. Madonna, after taking the stage, retorted: "If I'm still 'just like a virgin', Ricky, then why don't you come over here and do something about it? I haven't kissed a girl in a few years. On TV." Well done.

Who was the best presenter?

Surprisingly, Seth Rogen. He and the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale presented Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. Says Rogen, "And I'm currently trying to conceal a massive erection." (THAT is the unexpected irreverence we expect at the Globes!)

Were there any good acceptance speeches?

Yes. Clooney has apparently seen SHAME, because he commented that Michael Fassbender could play golf with both arms tied behind his back. Michelle Williams gave a genuinely touching speech about her daughter, which also made us think of her late ex-fiance Heath Ledger.

But the best speech of the night went to the folks at MODERN FAMILY. To celebrate the international nature of the Globes, Colombian bombshell and MODERN FAMILY star Sofia Vergara and co-creator Steven Levitan offered up a speech in both Spanish and English. I don't speak much Spanish, but I know enough to know that Levitan's translation of Vergara's Spanish wasn't particularly accurate: "Thank you to the MODERN FAMILY writers, who are so funny and so sexy... Film actresses: do yourselves a favor at the parties tonight, and give them your phone numbers... They may look pasty and nervous and out-of-shape, but they're the greatest lovers I've ever had... Seriously."

So, overall, what was your impression of the show?

It was surprisingly boring. The Golden Globes are supposed to be the fun one, the one where Jack Nicholson keeps his sunglasses on, or where Brad Pitt thanks the makers of Kaopectate, or where Christine Lahti almost misses her award because she was in the bathroom. They SERVE ALCOHOL at the Golden Globes, so you're supposed to be half-drunk when you're accepting an award. Someone (Warren Beatty, if I remember correctly) once said that the Oscars are business, but the Golden Globes are fun. For the most part tonight, unfortunately, they weren't.
