Ron_JamesBy Jessica Fralick - Calgary

The 24th Annual Gemini Awards were held in Calgary on Saturday night. Hosted by Ron James with some of the biggest Canadian stars in attendance, I would have to say that the night was successful.

Being_Erica_3One disappointment of the night was Amy Jo Johnson not winning the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Continued Leading Dramatic Role. Erin Karpluk won for Being Erica, which a lot of people expected.

Enrico Colantoni nabbed the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continued Leading Dramatic Role for his role in Flashpoint. I believe that he was just as stunned as everyone else. Having nothing prepared and he was a little emotional, but it was one of those touching moments that makes you like the person that much more because of their modesty. It appeared the odds were towards his co-star Hugh Dillon to win.

The show itself was delightful. All the presenters were on their A game as was Ron James who was an ideal host. I was a little surprised that they focused so much on the fact that the show was in Calgary and a lot of the jokes that James did were Calgary based, and perhaps ommiting a greater viewing audience.

The big deal of the night was the Calgary born boy from Glee, Cory Monteith. He presented the award for Best Comedy Program or Series, which went to the Rick Mercer Report. He was also invohugh_dillon_2009_geminilved with the big performance which included Canadian Idol winner Theo Tams, Mike Reno from Loverboy, Monteith, and the Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede doing a dance number that was very similar to the giant group dance that was performed on Oprah a couple months ago. I believe the whole audience expected Cory to sing, but instead he got behind the drums and rocked out. Disappointing, yet awesome!

I give a round of applause to the night. In the end Flashpoint came out on top with Best Drama Series so I couldn't really complain. No one pulled a Kanye West so this will probably be the last time you hear of the broadcast. Until next year folks that's a wrap in Canadian TV Land.
