Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craiglist Cantata brings the solitary, lonely world of online personal ads to the forefront in a show that is at once hilarious and absurd, and a thoughtful and important reflection on a society that is increasingly isolated by technology.I found it on craigslist or put it on craiglist or I saw it on craigslist are all phrases indicative of our internet-based society. In Do You Want What I Have Got? the audience gets a chance to see a world where real, live people are trying to sell/buy/give away items from their lives to strangers who may want them. As the 80-minute show progresses, what emerges is a series of vignettes where people are trying to connect, even if they request you “don’t call.”
All the performances were exceptional. The ensemble cast took on several characters, including a heartbroken cat lady, a stoned guy with extra chilli, a really sad clown, and a 23-year-old college grad trying to get rid of 200 penguins to an "exceptional child."
![]() Bree Greig’s performance of a young, urban woman looking for a roommate spoofed Chicago’s “Cell Block Tango” and brought to light a slew of hilarious neurosis associated with living with a stranger. Selina Martin’s performance of the self-appointed craigslist grammar crusader just nailed this element of the craiglist genre. Veda Hille’s voice is simply beautiful.
One thing that’s really exciting about Do You Want What I Have Got? is the fun it has with the strange and bizarre world of online ads, all while being careful not to make fun of the loneliness often inherent in these ads. Writers Hille and Bill Richardson were successful in using the online personal ads genre respectfully.
Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata is a really fun time and an important show that delves into an uncertain world of online personal ads! It's playing as part of the eighth annual PuSh International Performing Arts Festival at the Revue Stage on Granville Island now until February 18th, 2011.
