Reviewed By: Kindah Mardam Bey Nestled down a rare quiet street in the interior of Yorkville is the decide dly elegant Windsor Arms Hotel Afternoon Tea. Not quite the afternoon tea of British Victorian wives, The Tea Room is a contrast of pristine white tablecloths paired with plush royal purple velvet seating, the same eggplant inspired colour decorates the walls while the trim is porcelain white. The most spectacular features of the Tea Room are the original fire place and an enormous chandelier that looks as if it were on loan from Versailles. The tables are set with Bernardaud Limoges china from the “Louvre” line and silver cutlery. It will be hard to choose from an extensive selection of loose leaf teas that include new favourites like “Tibetan Tiger,” “Black Velvet,” “Russian Caravan,” “Chai Arms,” “Passion & Envy” and my personal recommendation of the Windsor Arms Private Collection Breakfast Blend. As I await my perfectly brewed tea, I hear one woman exclaim to her friend as they are seated “Tea time at The Windsor Arms is famous.” An apt endorsement from a customer if ever there was one.
The Windsor Arms has multiple options for Tea Time, including a “Tea To Go” which allows you to enjoy an afternoon treat while on the go, or even in a downtown park. You can have the “Cream Tea” which is a condensed version of Afternoon Tea, or a “Complete Tea” which is the Afternoon Tea itself (note: North Americans call English Afternoon Tea “High Tea”, but in England “High Tea” refers to a light dinner and Afternoon Tea serves sandwiches, scones, petit However, if you want to enjoy the ultimate Afternoon Tea experience at the Windsor Arms, then I recommend the “Full Tea” which includes Sandwiches (Smoked Salmon & Caviar and oven roasted Tomato Cream Cheese, Baby Greens with Asparagus Cucumber Salsa & Chive Cream Cheese, Grilled Chicken with Citrus Essence Goat Cheese), a Caramelized Shallot Tart, Scones with preserves and Devonshire Cream, Petit Fours, Berries & Whipped Cream, Tea and a simply delightful glass of either Sherry or Sparkling White Wine. The tarts set the palette afire. It is probably best to eat these mini-quiche looking tarts first as they are served warm. The sandwiches are easily the most perfectly balanced combination of flavours I have had the pleasure to enjoy at any sitting of an afternoon tea. The Devonshire cream is lightly chilled and ideal to pair with a plenitude of two scones which happen to melt like “buttah” in your mouth. The Chocolate Ganache and Pistachio Meringue are exemplary with strawberries and cream as an ideal way to end off the Tea. The Windsor Arms Tea Room has an upscale haute couture feel to it that France would be proud to see extending all the way to Canada. The Afternoon Tea at The Windsor Arms is truly an exquisite experience.
