bard_bandw_logoBARD ON THE BEACH ANNOUNCES 2010 SEASON

VANCOUVER, B.C….. Artistic Director Christopher Gaze is pleased to announce that Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival will run June 3 to September 25, 2010 under the familiar red and white tents in Vancouver’s Vanier Park. Tickets for the 21st season go on sale March 15th when Bard will roll over a new website with complete season details.

The season will open with the witty romance MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, in the 520-seat Mainstage tent. Dean Paul Gibson returns to stage this comical look at reluctant love and merry matchmaking. Playing in repertory with Much Ado… in the big tent is the passionate tragedy ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA. Longtime Bard on the Beach actor and Artistic Associate Scott Bellis will make his Festival directorial debut with this romantic and political drama. In the intimate 240-seat Douglas Campbell Studio Stage tent, Bard on the Beach continues its 3-year THE KINGS History Cycle. Glynis Leyshon returns to direct FALSTAFF, an exciting new adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, I & II by Errol Durbach. Playing in repertory with Falstaff is the powerful historical drama HENRY V directed by the ever-imaginative Meg Roe.

In Much Ado About Nothing, merry plots and malevolent deception abound before one of Shakespeare’s most famous comic constables saves the day. Passion, war and betrayal erupt in the rich romantic tragedy Antony and Cleopatra when Mark Antony must choose between duty and desire.  Falstaff follows the antics of the young Prince Hal who is led astray by the roguish knight Sir John Falstaff, while King Henry IV fights an unforgettable struggle for the heart and mind of his son, the future Henry V. Continuing the history series, Henry V follows the young king from his recent ascent to the throne through his maturity into a leader able to rally his “band of brothers” to win against impossible odds.
