Curious what's around the corner in Canadian film? Here's a couple of glimpses into the not-so-distant future. First up, a bit of an older trailer with some good news attached. Jay Baruchel (whose new film, Goon, just got reviewed on this very site) and Seth Rogen (soon to be seen in Sarah Polley's excellent Take This Waltz) put up the trailer for a potential post-apocalyptic buddy comedy a good five years ago, with nary a peep about the film since then. Today, though, Inside Movies has an interview where Baruchel confirms the project is moving forward, with filming set to start this spring. The cast has been expanded to include James Franco, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson, all apparently playing themselves as they try to survive Armageddon in Franco's LA mansion. Check out the five-year-old trailer below for a sense of what it's all about, but be warned, there's some more-than-strong language involved:
Today's other trailer doesn't have any big names involved, but it looks plenty trippy regardless. Panos Cosmatos' Beyond the Black Rainbow has already played at Whistler, Tribeca and Fantasia, with a US theatrical run to come, but for most, this trailer is their first glimpse of the Kubrik-influenced thriller. Described as a “Reagan-era fever dream,” the film seems to pull from sources as varied as 2001 and Clockwork Orange to Carl Sagan's Cosmos series and even maybe a dash of Zardoz, to truly unsettling effect. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
