BLOG: Top 5 Songs Written About A Girl Print
Saturday, 31 October 2009 16:16

Every band has (or should have) one song dedicated specifically to a girl. While most of the time songs like these either end in huge radio hits or restraining orders and personal security, it’s always great to hear a song for that special someone (especially when the entire world can hear and gossip about it.) The following is a list as I count down the top five songs dedicated to a special (or not so special) girl

Antonia_Motion_City_Soundtrack5. Antonia - Motion City Soundtrack

“She makes a lot of abstract art/she haggles for the cheapest price/she never orders take out food/before ten o’ clock at night,” Oh young love! Where would we be without all your little quirks and odd little habits. Well I can tell you one thing, we would be without this charming song by Motion City Soundtrack, all about a young lady named Antonia, as lead singer Justin Pierre shares with the world all the little things that make her special. Of course the entire song ends in lovely fashion, “our baby girl is due this may/and when the little baby grows up/I hope that she will be just like her mother.”

Derek__The_Dominos_-_Layla_And_Other_Assorted_Love_Songs_-_Front4. Layla - Derek And The Dominoes

Let’s be honest, there probably hasn’t ever been one person that listened to pop music that hasn’t found themselves nodding their head to this tune and then randomly breaking it out every time it crosses their mind. Eric Clapton knew he had a gem in his hands with this track, complete with an amazing guitar riff and piano outro, Layla will be remembered for decades to come, maybe not in the best way though (something about being on his knees, I can’t remember now...)

250px-Delilah_EP3. Hey There Delilah - Plain White T’s

How dare I leave this song out of the list, one of the biggest chart hits concerning a girl in the history of radio, it catapulted an obscure band into the limelight after it was re-released on their second album. This song made the world obsessed with Delilah (they found pictures and everything!) and made every single girl swoon, hoping one day a poor musician might write an acoustic ballad of how they’ll pay the bills with their guitar.

2. Roxanne - The Police

Not only one of the best Police songs EVER, it’s also the winner of the coveted second place on my list of songs about the ladies. “Roxanne” may not necessarily be an affectionate portrayal of a young lady trying to make money as a prostitute, but it certainly is about her (if you listen hard enough she is mentioned not once, but twenty seven times.) Although this song is concerning some risky business, Sting’s voice could melt a girl’s heart like stick of butter in a microwave (I forgot it was there I swear), making this song an obvious number two.

Dirty-Diana1. Dirty Diana - Michael Jackson

Drumroll please! The number one song about girls goes to the great king of pop himself Michael Jackson. Groupies are wild in this song as Diana is remembered forever as being quite the “fan” of musicians, some might even go as far to say that she is “dirty” (lame, I know.) But this song is catchy in every way that you just can’t help belting out the chorus when a lady introduces herself as Diana (I’ve lost many potential friends doing so.) This song is everything a song about a girl should be, especially when the guitar solo kicks in!

So there we have it, the top five songs written about girls. Try listening to any of these and then try to get them out of your head (it’s difficult, you’ll be trying for days.) Don’t be a stranger though, feedback is appreciated let me know if you know any songs that deserve to be on this list more than the five listed....

I second the vote for Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. Classic! I do love Dirty Diana though :)

This is a great selection Max!
So true about Layla - once I get that song in my head it takes days to get it out. :-)
I would have to say that Michael Jackson's song about a woman should take first place, but it would be a tight competition between Billie Jean and Dirty Diana!
