unrequited love songsHere are ten songs that’ll help you cry, dance, and scream the Godforsaken love out.

1. Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down – Fall Out Boy

“Am I more than you bargained for yet?

I've been dying to tell you anything you want to hear

Cause that's just who I am this week”

When constructing the ultimate unrequited love mix, it’s essential to open with a light-hearted take on one-sided infatuation. After all, every doomed love affair begins with the harmless need to be anything your love wants you to be, and follows with the eventual knowledge that if you have to try at it, well sugar, you’re going down.

 2. Lies - Marina and the Diamonds

“You're too proud to say that you've made a mistake

You're a coward to the end

I don't wanna admit that we're not gonna fit

No, I'm not the type that you like

Why don't we just pretend?”

As we move on from FOB’s insatiable need to “be the friction in your jeans”,,we find ourselves in Marina territory, asking, what do you do when your lover only loves you when the lights are out? Yes, maybe they’re the coward, but there’s something about unreciprocated love that makes cowards of us all, content to go along with the lies, all in the name of love.

3. Bad Religion – Frank Ocean

“This unrequited love

To me it's nothing but

A one-man cult

And cyanide in my styrofoam cup”

Ocean’s “Bad Religion” is aptly titled – love is somewhat of a religion. We dedicate ourselves with blind faith to something that is not tangible, and when that love isn’t returned, it becomes a very, very bad religion to find yourself in alone.

4. Sweet Nothing – Calvin Harris ft. Florence Welch

“So I put my faith in something unknown

I'm living on such sweet nothing

But I'm tired of hope with nothing to hold

I'm living on such sweet nothing”

The perfect transition from Frank Ocean’s “Bad Religion,” Harris and Welch’s “Sweet Nothing” tells of the same woe – dedicating yourself to someone who gives you very little in return, yet somehow still finding comfort in the bittersweet masochism of such sweet anything.

5. The Nicest Thing – Kate Nash

“I wish I was your favourite girl

I wish you thought I was the reason you are in the world

I wish my smile was your favourite kind of smile

I wish the way that I dressed was your favourite kind of style”

What makes Nash’s tune so essential to this playlist is the shameless admission that when we want to be loved in return, we want every little thing that idealistic love promises; we want to be someone’s favourite; we want them to remember those little quirks that only make an appearance on a rainy Sunday afternoon; we want to be essential to their day. We want ‘the nicest thing.’

6. Don’t Confess – Tegan and Sara

“You send a little love my way

And every second I spend waiting

Drags me closer to this grave”

Tegan and Sara’s “Don’t Confess” captures the feeling of being stuck waiting for more. Stuck waiting for someday and silenced by the fear that someday may never come.

 7. Chasing Pavements – Adele

“Should I give up,

Or should I just keep chasin' pavements?

Even if it leads nowhere

Or would it be a waste

Even if I knew my place”

Here comes the pivotal moment in any unrequited relationship: the questions of "is it worth it to keep trying?" "Where is this going?" and "Is it time to retreat in vain?" And when Adele’s asking, we’re listening.

8. Almost Lovers – A Fine Frenzy

“So long, my luckless romance

My back is turned on you

I should've known you'd bring me heartache

Almost lovers always do”

As you try to move on from the love that could have been but never really was, you find yourself looking back. In retrospect, it’s easier to see what was never meant to be, even if that doesn’t make it easier to move on from what almost was.

 9. I Can’t Make You Love Me / Nick of Time – Bon Iver

“Cause I can't make you love me

If you don't

If you don't find love, darling

Oh, on your own

'Cause you know that I found love, darling

On my own, on my own, on my own”

As we begin the road back from love-struck ruin, we become resigned to accept the things we cannot change, and the courage to change the things we can. We realize that we can’t force someone to love us, that maybe finding love begins with us on our own.

10. Starring Role – Marina and the Diamonds

“You don't love me, big fucking deal

I'll never tell, you how I feel

You don't love me, not a big deal

I'll never tell you how I feel”

To end off this mix, we have a lady who’s already made an appearance once on this list, though this time with a slightly different tone. Sometimes, it’s easy to play the victim when it comes to not being loved back, but if there’s something Marina can teach us, it’s that it’s always better to play the badass.
