An Interview with Tim Chaisson of MORNING FOLD Print

Tim Chaisson has been a rising star from Prince Edward Island since he was a teenager cultivating his solo career. Now gracing the stage with a full compliment, Tim Chaisson and Morning Fold are proving that the PEI music scene is one to be on the lookout for.

Morning Fold is Chaisson (who plays acoustic guitar, fiddle, piano and sings), Tian Wigmore (electric guitar, backing vocals), Brien McCarthy (bass) and Nat Lamoureux (drums). Gordie Johnson, who produced the album, also appears on several tracks playing the bass or keys.

An early highlight of Morning Fold’s career was a gig at the 2010 Olympics. “We are pretty pumped. Myself and the band haven’t played in Vancouver before and it’s going to be pretty crazy there,” said Chaisson prior to their February 13th show in Vancouver.

The band’s latest release Broken Hearted Beat, combines Chaisson’s solo musings with his time with Morning Fold. “I think it’s an eclectic mix of styles. I grew up in a traditional Celtic family and I played with my family in a Celtic band. My brother and sister still play traditional Celtic music, and it certainly had an effect on me as a teenager. I feel like the guys really brought it together for the album, we’ve got pop, folk, country, and rock. Working with Gordie Johnson and Joel Plaskett was great. It definitely has an East coast feel with tons of good stuff from PEI, and it comes together nicely," explained Chaisson.

Chaisson sees a bright future ahead for the music scene of Canada’s smallest province.  “It’s actually getting a lot better. PEI now has our own music association, and in the last couple of years it’s helped a couple of artists with financially expanding and it’s going to help lots of good bands that nobody has heard yet. It’s going to get bigger,” he said.

Chaisson and Morning Fold have certainly been noticed, evident by the many nominations and winnings from award shows, including Group of the Year and Pop Recording of the Year at the PEI music awards, and a nomination for Pop Recording of the Year at the upcoming East Coast Music Awards.

“I don’t know if we will win or not but it is great to be nominated. We will be playing a few shows that weekend as well to showcase some songs. The [ECMA] is a great concept and it will show off a lot of great acts,” said Chaisson.

Last year, Chaisson painted a painting for a charity auction collecting for Kidney Research. “I don’t see myself as a painter by any means," he said. "But I’m doing it again next year for the same organization. Somebody actually bought the last one, which was great.”

In addition, Chaisson has spent some time writing songs for fellow artists. “I’ve started to do that a bit. There is one song that another artist from PEI is doing. The last little bit we’ve been focused on recording our own stuff, but I would love to write songs in the future,” he said.

Chaisson is proud of Broken Hearted Beat, and says there is no best song for him. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have ones that resound with him more than others. “‘I’ll Have You Know’ [is one] that is special to me. I wrote it with Joel Plaskett and it has a country kind of rhyme to it. But they all have something that means something to me," he explained.
