After a limited online release last year, Treasury Library Canada- the much awaited sophomore album from Woodpigeon- is now available as an official release, complete with shiny new packaging and a 10-song bonus CD, Houndstooth Europa.
Led by Mark Hamilton, Woodpigeon is a collective of musicians from Calgary. Officially the band numbers 8 members, but features a myriad of guest artists who hail ‘from sea to shining sea’. Treasury Library Canada is a masterpiece of orchestral bent folk pop. Hamilton serves as the primary songwriter on this project, and his carefully chosen lyrics are flushed out by the full sound and arrangements of the octet.
The album deals with struggling to find and define home and one’s place in the world. Hamilton’s songwriting is deep and diverse. ‘In the Battle of Sun Vs. Curtains, Sun Loses and We Sleep Until Noon’ could be the musical lovechild of Bob Dylan and Sufjan Stevens. While ‘Piano Pieces for Adult Beginners’ and ‘Love in the Time of Hopscotch’ reflect a more playful outlook on the universal themes of hope and love.
Fans of Sufjan Stevens or Belle and Sebastien or even Canadian Music Fans in general should be sure not to miss out on Woodpigeon.
