Artist: Tim Chaisson and Morning Fold Album: Broken Hearted Beat Label: Indie Release Date: September 12, 2009 Genre: Folk/Pop
Reviewed By Alex Hutt Tim Chaisson is without question a master of his instruments, as he plays fiddle, acoustic guitar and piano all while singing on the first Morning Fold album, "Broken Hearted Beat". The best track on the album is the single "Slippin Away" which has whimsical and interesting harmonies and rhythms, and Chaisson doesn't strain his voice past its good point. The same can be said for "Lay Low", a good choice to open up the album with. Being from PEI, it is truly evident in the lyrics that mold into the music perfectly, especially for the two songs mentioned above. The title track "Broken Hearted Beat" is another good addition, where the chorus is one of the most intriguing of the album, and it took me a couple listens to figure out what I thought the song was about. Where the album falters a bit is in "Perfect" and "You And I Somehow", where Chaisson pushes the boundaries of his voice - kudos for doing so - but it doesn't really fit into these songs. His vocals work best in songs that have melodies that don't require high or long notes. But in the end the beat and feel of the album is an uplifting one, and the songs are pleasing for any listener's ears. Track Listing: 1. Lay Low 2. Broken Hearted Beat 3. Slippin Away 4. Don't Lie To Me 5. Perfect 6. You And I Somehow 7. I'll Have You Know 8. Would You Go So Far 9. Souris River Girl 10. Double Knife 11. Real 12. Take A Breath
