Stella is not your average screaming metal band. They really defy categorization and their music embodies a unique mix of genres ranging from classic rock, to hardcore rock, to metal. Many influences can be heard in their songs and they have developed an original sound that is all their own.
While they are not exactly a metal band, their music still involves a lot of screaming. This aspect of the music can be quite alienating at first, but after a few listens to the EP, you’ll begin to hear how talented this band is and realize that the screaming is not there to cover up any musical inability, but it is simply their unique style of rock and roll.
If you can get past the fact that almost all of the lyrics are screamed at you, then the music can be very rewarding as their beautiful melodies and skilful musicianship shine through. One song on the album, “Transparency,” is a bit softer, and it showcases their other, more melodic vocal abilities.
Fans of metal and hardcore rock will appreciate the harder side to these songs, and they may find it refreshing that the songs actually have some depth and intelligence as opposed to senseless, incomprehensible yelling. It is apparent that a great deal of thought and care went into the composition of each song on this disc, and the lyrics seem genuine and honest.
I think this band is very talented, and they definitely don’t hold anything back. The guitar playing, drumming, and arrangement in these songs is exceptional, and with these important things in place, I expect that this band will only improve as they evolve and grow as musicians. While I’m sure there is a large enough audience for their style of music, I think their softer, less hardcore side is where they could really excel.
