"Only During Thunderstorms" is the third full-length album from college radio darlings Paper Moon. Formed in Winnepeg in 2000, the band’s two previous releases: "One Thousand Reasons to Stay…One Reason to Leave" (2002) and "Broken Hearts Break Faster Every Day" (2006) were both big hits on the Canadian Campus Radio charts. Their second album was nominated for Western Canadian Music Award for Best Pop Recording in 2006.
For "Only During Thunderstorms" the band wanted an edgier and more energetic sound so they opted to record with producer Ryan Worsley who has previously worked with Vancouver acts Dawntreader, Maplewood Lane and Matthew Walko. This album has all the hallmarks of fun indie-pop, complete with tambourines, handclaps and old school synthesizers. ‘This enormously small moment’ is a great place to start with this album, it’s a fun sing-and-clap-along number about appreciating the time we have: think the Beatles meets the Postal Service.
If you’re in the Vancouver area you can find Paper Moon at The Railway Club on Saturday May 9th for their CD release party (with special guests Dawntreader and Cinderpop). After that they’ll be embarking on a mini Western Canadian tour, hitting up Kelowna on May 12th (at The Grateful Fed), Penticton May 13th (at Voodoo’s), Edmonton May 14th (at the Crown & Anchor) and Calgary May 15th (at the Palamino).
