Artist: Kobra and The Lotus Album: Out Of The Pit Label: Kobra Music Release Date: March 9, 2010
Reviewed by: Alex Hutt When I interviewed lead singer Brittany Paige about their then upcoming album Out of The Pit, she said that there were “no pointless lyrics written about nothing.” That is certainly true, but the originality and broad subject matter of the songs is not enough to make the album one that is exceptional. For the 5 piece band from Calgary, too often, songs run into each other and it is hard to tell whether you have moved onto the next track on the album. This detracts from the many messages within the songs, for instance, “Ballad of Jane Doe” is about two little Afghanistani ballerinas who were unfortunate enough to be caught up in the war. “The Hooker” profiles the hardships that one in the trade goes through. Unfortunately, it is hard to catch these lyrics amidst all the repetitive drum lines and guitar riffs that all seem to be the same like the guitarist fell asleep playing the same chord. However, the welcome addition to the album is the song “Legend”, where Paige shows off her vocal training in opera and it is the only song where Chris Swenson and Matt Van Wezel demonstrate that they can play a different song. Having said this, the album can still be enjoyable, since it is obvious that Kobra and the Lotus love to rock out. They are probably a great live act, even if their music is not the most interesting. Track Listing 1. Cynical Wasteland 2. Here Come the Silver Bells!! 3. Legend 4. It's Yours 5. Ballad of Jane Doe 6. Ace of Spades 7. The Hooker 8. Ride Like Sugar 9. FOCFOM 10. Teaspoon of Metal
