Reviewed by Sarah Miller (Vancouver Correspondent) Black Square is the newest album from DD/MM/YYYY, a band from Toronto with no name and no genre. They write in their bio that they aim to explore, be open to all musical concepts and “are stubborn only with regards to a ‘no-style’ approach to making music.” It certainly holds true throughout Black Square, as it’s really hard to nail down any influences or compare their sound to anything else other than their stated influences of Frank Zappa, Dada art and video games. But for pseudo art-rock (for lack of a better term), DD/MM/YYYY manages to keep their music fairly approachable. ‘Infinity Skull Cube’ is a good place to start on this album. Be prepared to experience everything from rock and roll to electro-acoustic music. The energy and musicianship on Black Square practically begs you to see DD/MM/YYYY live. Fans in Eastern Canada can catch them at one of their release party weekend shows: April 16 at Lee’s Palace in Toronto, April 17 at Il Motore in Montreal, April 18 at Le Cercle in Quebec City, and April 19 at Mavericks in Ottawa.
