C Artist: Carolina Chocolate Drops Album: Genuine Negro Jig Label: Nonesuch Records Release Date: February 16, 2010
Reviewed By: Alex Hutt To put it simply, this is already one of the best albums of 2010. Exemplary instrumentation, powerful vocals, and excellent song choice make Genuine Negro Jig stand out from the rest of the pack. Formed after Rhiannon Giddens, Justin Robinson and Dom Flemons met and worked with old time fiddler Joe Thompson, The Carolina Chocolate Drops harken back to the old blues and folk music that got our feet stompin'. Yet the album still has a modern touch, as each member of the band is in their early 20's and the music calls to listeners of all ages. It is just a treat for the ears. There are no weak tracks on the album, as each of their voices (they cycle vocals) rings true to the song. Giddens' "Why Don't You Do Right" is soothing and sultry, complete with her jazz-perfect voice. Then she shows off her pipes in a cover of "Hit Em' Up Style", a high energy blues revenge song that will have you singing along. With Flemons and Robinson, "Trampled Rose" and "Your Baby Ain't Sweet Like Mine" are two excellent tracks that will make your body sway. What is the best about the Chocolate Drops music is that you can listen to it when you have company or when you or by yourself, at top volume or in the background and you will love it either way. If you have a chance, pick up Genuine Negro Jig, you won't regret owning an album you will love for years. Track Listing: 1. Behind The Bridge
