Over a year ago, Galactic released Ya-Ka-May, their kaleidoscopic genre-bending New Orleans mixtape. Featuring over a dozen guests from every generation — from old-school soul sister Irma Thomas, to bounce hip-hopper Big Freedia — it was a love letter to every nook and cranny of New Orleans. But one had to ask (and we did): How do you take these songs on the road and still maintain that sense of sparkle and spontaneity?

The answer is, we didn’t have to worry. This is a funk band, after all. They’ve been at it for over ten years, and on top of that, they’re from New Orleans. Everybody in town knows everybody, so there’s still plenty of guest appearances peppered throughout, from Trombone Shorty to the Soul Rebels Brass Band.

There are few missteps in the latest effort from Manitoban band The Details, Lost Art. With the combination of singer-songwriter Jon Plett’s vocals, and Plett’s and guitarist Sean Vidal’s creative lyrics, it’s a welcome addition to this year’s music.

It’s been three years since The Details’s previous full length album (Draw A Distance, Draw A Border was released in 2007), which Plett joked about in our interview. However, taking in the great selection of songs on Lost Art made it worth the gap. Add a comment

Who said rock was dead? According to some, apparently it is. It’s no secret that, as of recent, rock has taken a definite back seat to the dance pop chart hogging Lady Gagas and the Katy Perrys of the world, but Dave Grohl and company are back to prove to the world that rock is undoubtedly alive and well.

Two summers ago I saw Chris Velan play live at Virgin Festival in Vancouver, and my interest was immediately piqued. With the release of his fourth album, Fables For Fighters, it seems that interest wasn’t entirely undeserved.

This is mainly because the first track off of the album, “Any Number Of Ways” grabs the listener and throws them into a dreamlike whimsical world with lyrics such as “dogs showed up in an angry pack/ hounded us/we hound back.” It really gets the imagination going.

There are generally two camps of thought, when it comes to Britney Spears. There are those who support her every move, and likely have since the days of “…Baby One More Time.” These are the fans that stuck by her during her darker times, and assured themselves that her hair would grow back when she shaved it all off in a fit of public insanity, in February 2007. Then there are people who have never liked her, and probably never will. When she was handcuffed and taken to the hospital in January 2008, after an extremely public stand-off, these people likely shook their heads, and thought it was just another day from the songstress, who had fallen from grace. They decry her seemingly insubstantial voice, and scoff at the fact that she lip-synchs most, if not all, of her concerts. There is also likely a third party, of those who may hear a Britney song once and awhile, and sing along, or nod their heads rhythmically in a dance club, while sipping their drink.
