Whether she’s a bad girl or a glamour queen, there is not much Lana Del Rey is pretending not to be in her debut album.

The newest tough girl, Lana Del Rey, doesn’t sell herself as a rebellious image, but as a suffocating glam-obsessed girl who wants nothing more than to be loved. On her debut album, Born To Die, LDR tells tales of a jaded New York life—a less commercialized version than one would expect from an artist who has received copious amounts of attention from the press.

This strong desire for attention is confessed immediately on “Blue Jeans,” the opening track on Born To Die. With a raw language that makes her truthfulness questionable, LDR addresses an emotional vulnerability that is a rare find in life. Her secrets are revealed with the twisted voice of a love-tainted girl. She sings of the dark and disturbing effect love can have on a person and the deep, shameful thoughts that should be kept to oneself. The disgraceful life of a young girl, “Carmen,” is told with a hypnotic tone in the lyrics, which replicates the inescapable trance this girl finds herself in. The lyrics are simple but draw a detailed scene of a young, street-working girl in distress.

While Red possesses a sweet-and-sincere quality, the album has a few too many wince-worthy moments and not quite enough wows for me to recommend it.

Though Red is her solo debut, it is not Dia Frampton's first foray into the music biz. She used to have a band with her sister called Meg & Dia. They released Here, Here, Here in 2009, enjoying some success — the even got a song on the TMNT soundtrack -— before being dropped from the Warner Bros. label in 2010.

Now Dia's back with Red, a pop album that flirts with a range of genres — from the infectious indy beat of “Walk Away” to the country tinged tracks “the Broken Ones” and “I Will”. Though Frampton herself appears to be an eclectic and dynamic performer, the impressive array of musicians listed as collaborators likely helped some of the tracks pop. Does “Bullseye” sound a lot like a Florence + the Machine track? It should! The Machine (Isabelle Summers) co-wrote and produced it. But, despite the number of musical heavy weights that she calls up, Frampton manages to keep the record sounding mostly like her own, not some indy hits of 2011 compilation.

Kathleen Edwards’ mature and passionate writing style is nothing less than impressive, and not simply because it shows off her undeniable talent. Listening to Voyageur you feel a connection between yourself, as a listener, and Edwards as another person, not necessarily an artist. Her music draws parallels to non-stardom life; the kind most of us live. The natural beauty of her lyrics, voice and musical rhythms grounds her and makes her music even more real, relatable and honest than almost anything else I have ever heard.

The Black Keys latest album, El Camino, is a hard-hitting, soulful compilation of quality sound. The rock duo, including Dan Auerbach (guitars/vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums), wasted no time putting together the tracks for El Camino after the 2010 release of Brothers.

This is the second album from the Quebecois singer-songwriter Coeur de Pirate, whose real name is Béatrice Martin. Following up her self-titled debut, this disc is loaded with emotionally charged ballads and heartfelt lyrics. Blonde is a great title for the album in that the word has a double meaning in French: it describes the hair colour and is also a word meaning “girlfriend.” This is quite appropriate as Martin talks a lot about relationships on the album.
