Reviewed By: Kindah Mardam Bey The Mount Royale Hotel in York is an exceedingly pleasing place to stay in one of England’s prettiest cities. York is a walking city with lots of sights to see along the way. The Mount Royale Hotel is a short distance from the city centre (approx. 10-15 minutes), to which you can enjoy a walk, or the front desk will call you a Taxi which are often quick to arrive and reasonable in fare.
All the modern conveniences were seen to and most appreciated by customers. This being a particular spot for business travelers as well, you can see the level of professionalism vested in each room. Although the building is old (dating back to the 1830s), the conveniences are very up-to-date – such as flat screen TVs, Wi-Fi same day laundry service and a mini-fridge. The bathrooms are exceptionally clean as are the linens and towels. I especially liked the "Ecossential Elements" bath and beauty line they had.
A spa is also located on the premises and One19 Restaurant is a delight to dine in. Award winning breakfasts are incredibly appetizing, especially cooked breakfasts. I had something as simple as poached eggs on toast and was pleasantly surprised at how truly delicious they ended up being here. Of all the delightful aspects of the Mount Royale Hotel, one thing seems to truly set this establishment apart – friendly service. This is a skill a hotel cannot simply acquire by opening up its doors to customers. No, no, friendly service comes from the hearts of the staff and in turn from the heart of the owners, the Oxtoby family, who care deeply that their customers enjoy their stay at The Mount Royale Hotel in York.

The hotel is simply picturesque with a stunning façade draped in ivy climbing up the wall. The entire feel of the Mount Royale Hotel is welcoming and in large part due to its incredibly friendly and cheerful staff. On my first visit the staff made me feel like a ‘regular’ who they had known for many years. The Hotel also has the same ambiance, as if you have been to stay many times over, even if this is your first visit. The entrance way seems to be a collective of unique and interesting items that capture the eye and inspire the mind. It is also a labyrinth of interesting public rooms around every corner. A very authentic pub, a delightful sitting area outside, Number 19 Dining room are all very different ways to enjoy your leisure time at the hotel.
My room, one of the four “Garden Suites” was clean, quiet and private. An enormous amount of space inside and outside as the ground-floor room had a wall of windows with sliding doors that backed out onto a quaint and “secret garden” type veranda. Had you not so much to see and do in York, you could most happily wile away the hours exploring the gardens and many public rooms of this establishment.
One of the highlights of the hotel is an indoor conservatory hallway full-to-bursting of green foliage which seems to almost glow from the sun. The hotel also has an extensive DVD collection and DVD players in every room, should you be stuck for entertainment in York, it is readily provided by the establishment.
