We can all forgive Drew Barrymore for producing Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle because she more than makes up for it in Whip It, her directorial feature debut. Starring Juno’s Ellen Page, this comedy drama (that leans more towards comedy) will leave you wishing you had a roller derby name like “Smashley Simpson” (Barrymore’s character).
Set in the small town of Bodeen, Texas, Whip It tells the story of Bliss (played by Page), a 17-year-old high school misfit with a rebellious side. Her mother lives to see her eldest daughter win the local beauty pageant, but crowns and gowns just don’t suit Bliss’ personality.
One day, she decides to explore the world of roller derby with her best friend Pash (Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat) and meets Kristen Wiig’s character (Maggie Mayhem) and her teammates, including Eve and Barrymore. Bliss ends up lying about her age to try out for the team and to no surprise makes the cut, but to the surprise of everyone, she’s not too shabby.
Whip It has a lot of things going for it; an incredible cast, a soundtrack worth purchasing and a well-written script that lets its actors shine. But I think most of of the film’s charm comes from its characters being relatable (and yes, I do mean the roller derby chicks as well).
Bliss is faced with the age old conflict of not living up to her mother’s impossible standards, and that’s
As Bliss, Page demonstrates why she was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Juno. This time around, she plays a more rebellious character, but there’s also a side of Bliss that’s vulnerable, which adds depth to her role.
The same goes for Page’s teammates, especially Kristen Wiig’s character who plays the other motherly figure in Bliss’ life. She may be famous for her signature expressions on Saturday Night Live but Wiig shows off some more serious acting chops in Whip It.
Two other performances you’ll definitely take notice of are Marcia Gay Harden as Bliss’ mother and Juliette Lewis’ Iron Maven, Page’s roller derby rival. Harden brings on the heartfelt moments while Lewis will have you laughing, and at the end of the day, Whip It will have you whipped (in a good way).

something we can all identify with. On top of that, she hasn’t really found her niche and has no attachment to anything, including her small town. It’s easy to feel for this character and that can also be attributed to Page’s performance in the film.
