Artist: The Decay/Wayfarer

Venue: Bovine Sex Club

City: Toronto

Date: June 17, 2010

By Aaron Binder - Toronto

It’s the first night of NXNE, the band has started late, and there are barely 30 people at the Bovine Sex Club and somehow they’ve all managed to cram themselves within 5 feet of the stage. The venue surprisingly doesn’t smell as much like a hockey locker room as normal, but that would change over the course of the evening as more and more people filtered their stank-filled, summer sweaty bodies into the tight confines of the club.

The Decay

Some good ol’ fashioned melodic punk rock kicked it off; The Decay is reppin’ hard from Guelph. Considering the plight of many bands playing at the festival, The Decay have a relatively light travel time compared to many of the bands that are coming into the festival and as such brought one heck of an energetic show. Their intense dual harmonies will probably remind you of Warped Tour circa 2002-2004 when it was chock-full of bands that just remind you of summer. They need to work on developing the depth of their songwriting, but they’re definitely a fun opener.

Wayfarerwayfarer

Independent music is definitely alive, thriving and probably planning a revolution in Ontario’s Tri-city area. Wayfarer came up from Kitchener to kick out some more good ol’ fashioned melodic punk, this time with a bit of an edge. Their vocalist may be a youngin’ but he has the beginnings of a gruff-voiced ruffian, although he does need to work on his projection. They have a hard-hitting style, with no breaks in between their songs. it would be nice to see them move around a little more, although that may have more to do with the microscopic stage than anything else. Just like their predecessor, they have some work to do on their songwriting before they become a real band, but it seems as though all of the pieces are there.
