Grimes1I would recommend seeing this show, if only to see the light-infused jackets worn by Born Gold or to experience a rare sense of truthful experimentation by GRIMES.

A light-up jacket, some camouflage, body-piercing speakers, a lot of unenthusiastic people, and experimental dreamscape sounds: a sold out show at Fortune Sound Club with GRIMES headlining and Born Gold opening.

I first saw GRIMES perform as Lykke Li’s opener last Spring at the Vogue Theatre and I have since been following GRIMES’s tribalistic dreamscapes created by synthesizers, plentiful reverb, and simple electric drum beats to compliment her airy, dream pop voice. This highly anticipated show presented a few issues, such as a couple of sound glitches with wrongly proportioned sound levels and a few pitchy sounds. Further, the audience proved the stereotype commonly found in interesting music scenes in Vancouver: the pretentious “I’m too cool to dance” crowd.
Interestingly, for this show, all of those issues worked out positively. The sound issues added to the raw dreamscapes GRIMES paints, her fluctuating pitch humbles her airy vibe and finally, the contained crowd allowed for a full intrapersonal experience. At the risk of sounding utterly ironic, the intrapersonal self-containment allows for the audience to understand one another, it seems as though the music drives through persons. Perhaps it was the lack of oxygen in the venue or perhaps it was the amount of individual “dancers”, some peacefully feeling a vibe and others irreverently convulsing, which resulted in a surreal experience. I can only speak from my own experience, however it is perhaps due to the mere fact that this music is so intrapersonal that it could only truly be experienced fully, if done so in an intrapersonal mind-space.
The intrapersonal dimension outlines a collection of various new wave styles of conceptual music. Similar to the sounds of Lykke Li in that small sounds are strategically placed to create a space filling sound. Further, the ability to elevate an audience to such degree speaks to an understanding of various musical genres such as glitch from the 90s to industrial pop, some wonky pop styles and perhaps just the slightest bit of trance aesthetic. This compilation and obvious appreciation for musical evolution and experimentation leave me wanting to name this show: future tribal faerie (with all positive intention). Ultimately, though the set was short, the show did not disappoint. I would definitely recommend seeing this show, if anything to see the quirky styles of light-infused jackets worn by Born Gold or to experience a rare sense of truthful experimentation by GRIMES.
