Where: Calgary, Alberta
By: Amanda Waschuk (Calgary Correspondent)
Dragonforce named their band something that totally throws off someone unfamiliar with their music, and yet is completely fitting once you see them live. Based just off the name, I envisioned a gothic group of men in black producing angry music full of screaming and rough, raunchy guitar. But what I saw at the show was a well-produced, theatrical performance based around remarkable speed guitar times 3, electronic piano, an astonishingly quick-beat drummer, and beautiful vocals.
With four albums under their belt, this decade old band had plenty of classics mixed in with new material and the crowd simply ate it up. Their sound can be described as “retro-video game influenced” as stated by Wikipedia, but I see it as cheesy 80s rock made sophisticated with raw talent that meshes to create a new, out-of-this-world sound. The keyboard creates a bit of an electronic tinge to all of the songs as it plays a variety of different tones and the guitarists play so fast that, at times, the only way to hit all of the notes is to play it as if it were a keyboard.
Don’t be fooled by the name Dragonforce because in reality, it depicts their stage presence: very powerful with a bit of fantasy sprinkled on top. If their unique sound isn’t enough to draw in interest, the antics of the boys along with amazing stage lights that move around to compliment every note make this show an unforgettable one.
