Concert Review
Artist: White Lies
Venue: Phoenix Concert Theatre
Date: August 3, 2011

Review & Photos by Sarah Rix (Toronto)
It’s a wonder it’s taken me this long to see White Lies live. On record they’re polished and put-together – elements that bands often struggle to capture in a live setting. With such a well-produced sound, it is an easy let down to realize a band on record is much different from a band on stage (see the recently reviewed Death Cab For Cutie show for evidence of this). Thankfully White Lies comes off much as they do in their albums - a pleasant surprise in a studio world.

Concert Review
Artist: Death Cab For Cutie
Opening Act: Frightened Rabbit
Venue: Molson Amphitheatre
Date: July 29, 2011

It hasn’t taken Death Cab For Cutie very long to make their return. After a sweaty, cramped club show in May, the American band returned to Toronto, this time greeted by beautiful weather and a larger (though by no means sold out) crowd at the roomier Molson Amphitheatre. Touring their seventh studio album, 2011’s Codes And Keys, the band seemed in high spirits and showed their music chops in a technically superior set that only faltered in audience pull.

Sometimes you can’t fully appreciate a band’s talent until you’ve actually witnessed them live. Let’s face it, anyone can make an album with the help of a studio – just ask Smashing Pumpkins. But if there’s one thing Seattle’s Fleet Foxes have already perfected in their young career, it’s translating what they’ve cut to tape to the stage in an absolute flawless fashion. And what better platform to do so than Massey Hall?

As a sold out Molson Amphitheatre can attest to, The Black Keys have seen their music increasingly reach out to a broad array of music fans.

A few weeks ago, Toronto streets seemed to be a game of “Where’s Waldo?” as Tweets filtered in reported sightings of The Black Keys checking out NXNE shows. Thursday night, all eyes were on guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney as they played a triumphant show to a highly expectant crowd.

With a mesmerizing video and light show from the stage, the audience was also treated to nature's lightshow as the rain came down with forks of lightning about half way through the night.
