Artist: HAWKSLEY WORKMAN with CHAD VANGAALEN
Date: February 27, 2009
Venue: Commodore Ballroom
Where: Vancouver

I attended this concert purely on faith. Having only heard one song by each artist, I knew I could be excited about hearing new music or apprehensive about paying for tickets that could lead to a poor performance. It was no surprise that Chad VanGaalen would be enjoyable, as his acoustic style and endearing warble were my cup of tea. The real treat was Hawksley Workman, a man who floored me with his Broadway-level performance and storytelling lyrics.

Album Release Party
Artist: SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT with THE HUES, DUSTY GROOVES, and ALL OUT DJs
Date: February 28th-29th 2009
Venue: Starlite Room
Where: Edmonton, AB
By Xanthe Couture (Edmonton Correspondent)
How do you chant the name of a band that is well...long? Join in the crowd of fans and split up a rhythmic chant into two parts as the beat of the upcoming song overwhelms you.
Shout Out Out Out Out is a product of their harsh surroundings, the cracked, crumbling pavement streets and brutal gusts of arctic chill that is Edmonton. The release of their long awaited second, full-length album could not have happened on a better night, as another dose of winter had just dashed hopes of spring for another week. Waiting in the never ending brick hallway of the Starlite Room could not have provided a better lead-up to the gritty sounds of Reintegration Time.

Concert Review
Artist: FUTURECOP!

It was only a little over a month ago that my music snob of a friend introduced me to the UK group, Futurecop! I remember first listening to their Transformerstrack and was immediately hooked by its airy and nostalgic synth-pop sound. Hours later, I’ve downloaded their first EP, The Unicorn and the Lost City of Alvograth, and I’m still greedily scouring music blogs for more. By mashing up tracks from the 80’s and giving it a modern electro feel, Manzur Iqbal and Peter Carroll, the two 26 year-old blokes who make up Futurecop!, have produced something novel, yet fun and fantastically familiar.

Concert Review
Artist: BRITNEY SPEARS

Venue: Air Canada Centre

High production value, boundless energy, and expert lip-synching are just a few ways to describe Britney’s Toronto stop of her 2009 Circus tour. “It was more a show than a concert,” explained a friend, “but I think I was expecting that.” Spears is undoubtedly known for her stellar dancing and mediocre singing, but somehow, her performance had a lackluster essence to it, lacking her usually bubbly personality and a rapport with the audience.

You know you have found the epitome of a Canadian rock group when the die hard fan jumping on stage and almost getting kicked out by an unimpressed bouncer is a friend from the band’s home town.
But Wintersleep won’t be in Canadian territory for much longer as they head to Europe in May to continue touring the third album that won them a Juno for New Group of the Year in 2008, Welcome to the Night Sky.
