It’s taken them some time, but Brooklyn duo Sleigh Bells finally returned to Toronto with their wall of electronic, beat-heavy sound. After postponing their February concert in favour of an appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, the band – a touring three-piece – made good on their rescheduled date just over a month later.

While hundreds of music fans fled to Texas for South by Southwest, us poor souls stuck north of the border were treated to an early contender for best show of the year. Yes, another accolade for The Black Keys’ trophy cabinet.

They can license their music for use in commercials. They can charge $35 for a tshirt. They can come on stage at the Air Canada Centre looking almost exactly like they did in July 2011 when they played Toronto’s Molson Amphitheatre. Vocalist and guitarist Dan Auerbach can give fairly similar lines about “keeping things moving” in between songs. Drummer Patrick Carney can sit, bang the drums and give off the appearance that nothing else in the room matters. And all the while, they’re able to sell out arenas. Add a comment

Also based in Toronto and touring with the Trews are Poor Young Things who have just released Let it Sleep, their debut EP produced by Arkells producer Jon Drew, and they are working on their first full length album. With down to earth, folk inspired rock, these guys got the night off to a great start.

Grimes1I would recommend seeing this show, if only to see the light-infused jackets worn by Born Gold or to experience a rare sense of truthful experimentation by GRIMES.

A light-up jacket, some camouflage, body-piercing speakers, a lot of unenthusiastic people, and experimental dreamscape sounds: a sold out show at Fortune Sound Club with GRIMES headlining and Born Gold opening.

When The Darkness first emerged onto the rock scene, it was easy to assume they were just there for a few laughs and some 80s hair metal pastiche. For a while, their career trajectory seemed to confirm these suspicions. But upon closer inspection, the joke wasn’t so much Spinal Tap as it was a musically talented, actual band. And apparently people do still care about The Darkness — at least care enough for them to sell out Toronto’s Phoenix on the first stop of their 2012 tour. It made for a nice “welcome back” to the shores of North America.
