Reviewed By: Kindah Mardam Bey Kelly Walker speaks from a place of experience and life knowledge in Burn Out: Loss Of Soul. His own experience of once being a monk and then deciding to leave, spurred on by “burnout”, and the eventual evolution of himself after that turning point, has allowed Walker the much needed wisdom to go on and help others. Walker also provided therapy for many people, over an extended period of time, and has compiled a partial self-help book and partial informative reference book for all those going through burnout, those who have loved ones who are experiencing burnout and experts in the field. In what can only be described as brave, Walker opens up his own life experiences, often painful, to illustrate points of interest regarding tell-tale signs of burnout or what might be the causes of burnout. The chapters easily identify the process of burnout; "Going Down The Road," "Loss Of Soul," "The Pits," "Symptoms," "Roots," "Choose Life" and "Awakenings Without End." Burnout: Loss Of Soul is a searingly poignant book on the hows and whys of burnout. The book is careful not to diminish this difficult process of learning, but addresses people's emotions going through the experience, and provides many positive and constructive solutions for helping someone to evolve out of burnout. I won’t outline the suggestions Walker gives to remedy the situation of burnout, but I will say that his techniques may seem simple, but it is the intent behind the individual as to how much someone will benefit from these lifestyle changes. As Walker explains in the book, a great deal of people who experience burnout are either first born, or “babies” of a family. Throughout reading the book, I was amazed to find that at times in my own life I had experienced burnout and rendered it down to feeling melancholy, or holding the tide against depression. Now I understand many of those experiences were the emotional exhaustion of an overachiever! Burnout: Loss Of Soul is a very helpful and constructive book that provides clear signposts of what the situation is and how someone can deal with such times in their life.
