THEATRE ETIQUTTE: How to not look like a dope at the theatre.
Written By: Kindah Mardem Bey
It's all fun and games until a cellphone goes off in the middle of a performance and the freak who left their phone on has the nerve to answer it: “Oh no, I’m not busy.” We should stop the performance, face the culprit and point until they are ridiculed into silence. Okay, I might be a little overdramatic here, but attending enough theatre performances has taught me that ill-mannered attendees are simply people desperately seeking the attention of an entire audience. However, my ticket stub did not come with the disclaimer, “Please make sure you give your entire attention to Aisle G Seat 40 at exactly 43 minutes into the performance.” As a theatre-goer you don’t pay to give your undivided attention to anything but the play. So, here’s a short refresher course on the “do's” and “don'ts" of being a polite theatre-goer.
Check out the Stratford Shakespeare Festivals AWESOME 2011 Season!
Here’s to a potentially fantastic season in 2011 at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Recently announced, the 2011 season will highlight four of Shakespeare’s plays: The Merry Wives of Windsor, Richard III, Titus Andronicus, and Twelfth Night. Finally a collection theatre goers can sink their teeth into! Rarely do you see the likes of Merry Wives and Titus performed and Richard III promises to be possibly one of the most unique
versions of the play with Seana McKenna playing the lead. That’s right – a woman will be playing Richard, which may affront some people, but anyone who has seen any performance by McKenna in her 19 seasons at Stratford will know that after having played every major female character Shakespeare wrote, and even playing his wife Anne Hathaway in Shakespeare’s Will (which you can also see again in the 2011 season), McKenna has an incredible stage presence and can easily pull off such a performance – but how delicious to watch!
Geraint Wyn Davies a well-seasoned Stratford performer has been gifted with two exceptional characters to sink his teeth into as he will play Falstaff in Merry Wives and will also play King Arthur in Camelot, one of the two musicals set to be featured next season. The second will be Jesus Christ Superstar at the Avon theatre and directed by Des McAnuff. As McAnuff’s truer talent seems to be in musicals, this might be one to see next season.
