INTERNATIONAL STAR LAURIE ANDERSON
TO CALGARY AS ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE

laurie andersonCalgary, AB – Laurie Anderson, one of America’s most renowned and daring creative pioneers, will be the 2012 High Performance Rodeo’s Artist-in-Residence. She is best known for her multimedia presentations and innovative use of technology. As a writer, director, visual artist and vocalist Ms. Anderson has created groundbreaking works that span the worlds of art, theatre and experimental music. Throughout the High Performance Rodeo, Calgarians can experience Ms. Anderson’s multi faceted talent through a wide variety of components that make up her residency.
As the Artist-in-Residence for The High Performance Rodeo, Ms. Anderson will be showcased in five events in collaboration with its partners Theatre Junction GRAND and Glenbow Museum.
 

ANOTHER DAY IN AMERICA
Presented with Theatre Junction GRAND - Calgary's culture house for Contemporary Live Arts as part of their 21st Anniversary Season, Another Day in America will feature Anderson’s hallucinatory use of language and music to make up epic stories, with a focus on portraits of cities, people, politics and desire that make up the contemporary American landscape. Illusion, memory and the shifting states of American culture have been Anderson’s subjects since the late 70s. Another Day in America will take on the volatile present. The evening will feature electric violin and keyboards mixed with fuller electronic soundscapes to create an intimate look into the song writing style that has made Anderson one of the most original American song writers.

CANTOS INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCE TOUR
The Cantos Music Foundation is a music lover’s dreamscape. Its halls contain a one-of-a-kind Johannes Couchet harpsichord from 1679, a Kimball Theatre Organ from 1924, a Beatles-style Mellotron, Elton John’s songwriting piano, a keyboard-controlled analogue synthesizer used to score Apocalypse Now, and nearly 200 pieces of music history. The High Performance Rodeo is setting Laurie Anderson loose in Cantos, and inviting fifteen people to join her for an interactive dialogue as she explores a treasure trove of world instruments.

A BEGINNING, MIDDLE AND AN END: DINNER WITH LAURIE ANDERSON
In this unforgettable evening of culinary adventure, guests will join festival artist-in-residence Laurie Anderson and Chef Rogelio Herrera (Head Chef of Alloy) to prepare and enjoy a gourmet meal. Laurie Anderson is one of America's most renowned and daring creative pioneers. Known primarily for her multimedia presentations, she has cast herself in roles as varied as visual artist, composer, poet, photographer, filmmaker, electronics whiz, vocalist and instrumentalist. At this intimate event, join her for delicious dishes and inspiring conversation.

IN CONVERSATION
In conjunction with her video installation, The Gray Rabbit, Laurie Anderson will participate in Glenbow Museum's In Conversationseries. In Conversation's casual interview format gives audiences a chance to hear what artists, curators and other cultural innovators are thinking, what makes them tick and what inspires them.

THE GRAY RABBIT
The Glenbow Museum will present the North American premiere of The Gray Rabbit, in association with the High Performance Rodeo. This autobiographical video installation, filled with dreamlike and heavily processed images, re-explores Laurie Anderson’s memories of a pivotal childhood event, realizing that what she remembers and what she recounts to people is a "cleansed" version of the tale.

Now in its 26th year, the High Performance Rodeo continues through January 28, 2012 in over nineteen venues throughout Calgary, and features an extraordinary collection of the boldest and brightest artists from the realms of theatre, dance, comedy, music, visual arts and this year - wrestling. Curated by Artistic Director Michael Green, and produced by Erin O’Connor and the One Yellow Rabbit team, the High Performance Rodeo is dedicated to entertaining as wide an audience as imaginable, while remaining fertile ground for the progressive and wild. The High Performance Rodeo is the largest festival of its kind in Western Canada.
