Now is sooner than you think. With the 2010 Olympic Games only twelve months away, an effort to culturally diversify Vancouver has begun. The Culture Olympiad is a festival of performances, exhibitions and other events as a countdown to the 2010 Olympic Games. The initiative of the new exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery is fresh, contemporary and BC-oriented. If Paul Chato were a movie character, his story would consist of sharp twists and turns. And if his character had one trait, it would be humour. At 55, Chato is the owner of a successful web-developing company and a father of two. But one would never assume that this entrepreneur is one of Canada’s living-legends of comedy -- unless you’ve met him in person.

“Dialog in the Dark” is an interactive exhibit that allows participants to experience life without sight. With sound, temperature, wind, and smells, it becomes possible to experience ordinary settings, such as a farmers' market, a park, and a neighborhood, without seeing. Blind or visually impaired guides lead the temporarily sightless through the exhibit, sharing their stories along the way. The result is a heightened awareness of our other senses that often take a backseat to visual stimuli and an increased understanding of the challenges blind individuals face in the most ordinary activities.
