American Horror Story is finally back from the holidays. And it came back with quite a bang.
A lot happened this episode, and I saw almost none of it coming.
We are back in Dr. Arden's laboratory, as he is bringing Kit back to life after an experiment. Kit comes to, and asks what happened, to which Dr. Arden tells him that the experiment was unsuccessful because there was no alien visitation. We know that's a big lie. We see Dr. Arden with a pregnant Grace. Her new guardian, Pepper, is standing watch and confronts Dr. Arden, telling him that "they" are watching him, and "they" won't let him see what is inside of Grace.
As for Mary Eunice, she is nursing the Monsignor, but he now knows that she is the Devil. The black angel told him so, and she also told him that this is his moment. The Monsignor sets out to cast out the Devil, before it does any more damage to Mary Eunice, or anyone else for that matter.
Lana and Sister Jude are sitting together in the common room. I know it has been a few episodes, but I am still so fascinated by Jude's patient status. Jessica Lange does it so well and I can't get enough of it. Mary Eunice tries to humiliate Sister Jude, by pointing out that she was the one who broke their old record. Mary Eunice introduces their new jukebox, and dedicates "I Put a Spell on You" to Sister Jude, which Jude was seen performing in an earlier episode.
Kit walks into the common room, and Lana is overjoyed to see him. Her relief is short lived, because soon after, Dr. Threadson joins them. Mary Eunice has offered him a full-time job at the hospital. He also tells Lana that their unborn child is the only thing keeping her alive at the moment and that he will be "treating" the both of them again.
There's a room search being conducted, and Sister Jude thinks Mary Eunice is just mocking her old ways of doing things. Lana pins Mary Eunice up against a wall, and makes her anger about Dr. Threadson's return known. Sister Jude also has a bone to pick with Mary Eunice, and as a result, Sister Jude is prescribed some electroshock therapy. Dr. Arden insists that only 50% power be used on her, but Mary Eunice cranks up the dial.
The Monsignor begins his fight against the Devil. As Mary Eunice is caring for his hands, he grabs her and puts his rosary to her forehead. His effort does nothing, and she proves to be more powerful. She begins to seduce him, as Dr. Arden walks in and sees the the Monsignor losing his virginity to he Devil in Sister Mary Eunice's guise.
In the common room, Sister Jude is noticeably dazed. Lana knows exactly what has happened. Sister Jude starts hitting the jukebox, trying to make it stop. When Lana walks over and asks her if she knows her name still, the episode breaks into a weird musical number with everyone singing "The Name Game." This whole sequence was really strange for me, but it was colourful and bizarre, to say the least.
Dr. Arden is walking through the back woods, with a wheel barrow full of meat for his creatures. Mary Eunice catches up to him, and tells him that she wants to perform a lobotomy on Sister Jude. Dr. Arden tells her that his experiments are over, and he shoots the creatures dead. He says it is all a farce, and puts the gun to his own head, but doesn't shoot. He tells Mary Eunice he can't live with losing her, but she doesn't have any mercy for him. She leaves him crying on the ground.
In a really well-done scene, the Monsignor sits down with Sister Jude in the kitchen. He tells her that he was wrong not to trust her before, and that she has always been a loyal friend over the years. He tells her that he knows the truth about Mary Eunice. Sister Jude simply instructs him to kill Mary Eunice.
While snooping around Dr. Arden's office, Dr. Threadson hears screaming from the laboratory. When he goes to investigate, he finds Grace in labour, with Pepper by her side.
The Monsignor is praying as Mary Eunice walks in and tries to seduce him once again. She claims that he is now hers - mind, body, and soul. However, there is a glimpse of the real Mary Eunice, who breaks down in tears and says she is tired of fighting. The Monsignor takes this as his cue to push her over the stairs from the third floor. Mary Eunice falls to her death, as the black angel awaits.
The Monsignor is praying for her soul as Mary Eunice lies in a bed. Dr. Arden arrives, and says she must be cremated. The Monsignor asks to be of assistance, but Dr. Arden won't allow it.
An orderly brings Kit to Dr. Threadson, but Kit refuses to tell Dr. Threadson where the tape is hidden. As a taunt, Dr. Threadson brings Kit to see Grace and the new baby. Kit doesn't believe his eyes, as Grace is supposed to be dead. Dr. Threadson then searches for the incriminating tape he manipulated Kit into making, but discovers Lana in his office. She tells him she is the only person who knows where to find it and not to harm Kit.
Sister Jude, in a stupour, is trying to remember all of the patients' names in the common room. Mother Superior shows up, and Sister Jude tells her she wants to say goodbye before leaving for Rome to marry the Monsignor. Mother Superior tries to calm Sister Jude. Sister Jude then points to Lana, and tells Mother Superior that Lana does not belong in the asylum and insists she help her escape. Sister Jude is still trying to make right her wrongs.
Dr. Arden is in the crematorium, alone with Mary Eunice. He shockingly pushes himself into the oven along with Mary Eunice. The episode ends with his screams of pain.
